Each year, PINWU incorporates the research findings from the Róng Design Library into various design projects. In 2023-2024, the Róng Design Library and JNBY jointly launched the “Fabric Lab”, which published a research report on "Lock Weaving."

Lock weaving is a method of interlacing loops to form a surface.

In ancient times, people used naturally occurring ropes, simply threading and looping them to serve functional purposes. These humble innovations likely marked the origins of the lock weaving structure. On the seas, knots and nets showcased the ingenuity of fishermen; in the mountains, mesh bags carried the joy of harvest for the villagers; on the grasslands, knotted ropes were a practical tool for the nomadic daily life of herders. The intertwining of threads evolved knots into intricate and refined crafts—such as lace...

A knot, a strip, a net, a piece of fabric—simple structures layered in complexity yield finer expressions. The wild creativity found in humble daily life inspires us, bringing the ultimate beauty of decorative traditions back to life. Starting with a single structure, we explored and experimented with various shapes and combinations, embarking on this journey of creating the art installation.

The “Fabric Lab” is a five-year-long research project exploring ways to maximize fabric utilization and lifespan while minimizing waste.

For this art installation, surplus fabrics from JNBY's previous collections were repurposed. These fabrics were laser-cut into modular pieces and then assembled using a “lock weaving” technique, akin to knitting, to form large surfaces—allowing the fabrics to be fully utilized in countless possibilities.

“从第一次看到江南布衣开始，我就注意到它独到的剪裁和其中包含的大胆多元的时尚感。

Avant GardeN（先锋派+N） 概念的诞生是自然而然的，因为自然与大胆的时尚之间有着非常紧密的联系。 

 概念中的“花园”（gardeN）一词末尾的“N” 代表自然（nature)。它给了我很多理由去追寻大胆前卫的设计，同时又保持花园朴素之美的神圣自然形态。”

During the material experimentation and structural exploration, we considered the essential elements needed to construct a garden. We selected key unit types to create a one-of-a-kind art installation.

● Landscape & Stones

From a distance, one can see a hillside where the landscape and stones grow and spread across the metal framework. From afar, it appears as a continuous and undulating scene.

A bit closer, the layers of rocks and trees overlap and obscure the view. Closer still, the bark reveals its intricate grooves and textures. Composed of countless simple geometric shapes, the patterns and textures of different fabrics merge into an imaginative landscape on the ground.

Simple unit shapes, complex stacking, and intricate textures—through modern design language, we aim to mimic the natural landscapes of mountains and waters, creating a surreal garden of wonder.

● Jungle

Plants in nature come in various forms: some are rounded or sharp, some are sturdy and thick, while others are loose and sprawling. Drawing inspiration from these forms, we designed three basic units, integrating the findings from the “Fabric Lab” research.

Using a limited number of units, different forms are derived through various lasso techniques and the organic combination of components, creating a layered jungle backdrop within this surreal landscape.

In this surreal landscape, the most striking presence is the flowers. They grow freely, casually clinging to the rocks and plants around them.

Five different shapes and color schemes were designed for the flowers of the garden, including fluorescent green, fluorescent orange, and fluorescent pink—unnatural colors paired with sharp, striking forms. These elements stand out against the understated, simple landscape, adding a touch of boldness and unruliness.

In addition, we designed equally vibrant and dazzling headpieces for the creative and imaginative inhabitants of the garden.

At the center of the avant garden stands a telephone booth that connects the past and the future. Every visitor who picks up the phone can choose to travel 30 years back or 30 years forward, engaging in a futuristic poetic dialogue with the avant landscape.

In this space, the boundary between reality and imagination is blurred.
